LONDON: Tamu Pye Lhu Sangh, a-UK based organization of Tamu Gurung Nepalese people, celebrated Muprhi Lhosar, or the New Year, here in London recently.
The celebration kicked off in the morning with religious prayers followed by formal programme and cultural shows later. Nepalese ambassador to the UK Dr Suresh Chandra Chalise, Mayor of London Borough of Harrow Mrinal Chaudry were invited as the special guests on the occasion. Other dignitaries from various organizations and universities also attended the event.
During the formal programme, Dr Chalise gave away certificates to life members of the organization and also felicitated various personalities who have earned their Ph. D. from various universities.
Coordinator of the main organizing committee Cpt. Phatta Bahadur Tamu informed the participants of health and safety while vice-chairman of the organization Nar Bahadur Tamu had welcomed the participants.
In the second phase of the event, the attendants were mesmerised in various Nepalese folk songs and dance numbers.
Gurung communities celebrate Tamu Lhosar with much fanfare and merry-making. This festival is marked on Poush 15 of the Nepali calendar, usually falls on December 28-30.
According to figures, Gurungs, who mainly believe in Bonism, occupy about 2.39 per cent of the total population of Nepal.
